After 20 years of service by connecting people thru its instant messaging (IM) feature, Yahoo Messenger is now shutting down.

“Yahoo Messenger will no longer be supported after July 17, 2018. Until then, you can continue to use the service normally. After July 17, you’ll no longer be able to access your chats and the service will no longer work. Read our FAQs below for more info on what this means for you.”

This is the official statement from Yahoo but why does it seem like it’s not making much of a news?

The simplest explanation little to no one is on it or using it.

With the rise of the instant messaging apps like WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat, and Messenger, a little to no room was left for Yahoo Messenger.

Facts about Yahoo Messenger:

Yahoo Messenger is mostly abbreviate to YM and originally launched under the name Yahoo! Pager on March 9, 1998. YM also offers file sharing with sizes up to 2GB.

It was the first major IM client to have introduced the Buzz by the use of Ping. It could also be the reason why some people are using the term “ping me” because, in YM, it’s a term used to let someone know you’re online or waiting for their response.

YM also had the feature of letting users’ access public chat rooms although it was shut down in December 2012.

“We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind. As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”

That’s sad, can I download my chat history (for nostalgic purposes, I suppose)?

“Through the end of November 2018, you can download your chat history to you[r] personal computer or device.

Go to the downloader request site and follow the next steps.

No replacement is being offered currently for Yahoo Messenger but the site did say that they have an invite-only group which is still in beta. Users can request an invite at squirrel.yahoo.com.

Even though Yahoo messenger is shutting down, Yahoo made it clear that it will not affect your Yahoo ID at all and can continue to use other Yahoo services like Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Fantasy and more.
